Refugee policy: Countries in the Mediterranean are the most difficult, as refugees are all crossing the sea. In the EU, the Dublin Convention applies, where they first entered European soil, they also have to apply for asylum. The end result is that the northern rich countries, such as Denmark, Sweden and Finland, have been spared by this crisis. This should be changed and a single set of rules such as the EU distribution key should be introduced. The EU distribution key guarantees that each EU country should receive refugees depending on the number of inhabitants, GDP, unemployment rate and asylum seekers already received. This will ensure a fairer distribution of roles.
Nevertheless, what is important is Frontex. It is the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. However, their implementation is questionable. They should focus more on smugglers, as refugees pay a lot of money to (mostly over-indebted) to come to the EU. They guarantee not only the protection of the Schengen area, but also the prevention of trafficking in human beings.
