A web-assisted process enabling the participatory exploration an evaluation of alternative futures

    Authors

I am an evaluation consultant based in Cambridge, UK. My work straddles the field of evaluation methodologies and foresight practices, including both participatory and hybrid human-AI informed approaches. For more information on my own background see https://richardjdavies.wordpress.com/

This 14 minute video (seen below) was prepared for presentation at the 2026 Futues4Europe conference, to be held in Rome in late September. It describes the use of ParEvo, web-assisted process enabling the participatory exploration and evaluation of alternative futures. The ParEvo.org web application was built in 2019 and has since been used for more than foresight 20 exercises on a diversity of subjects by a range of organisations on subjects to do with:
    - Pension fund risk management strategies in the face of American tariff policies
    - Possible futures for civil society organisations in Europe
    - Futures relating to the management of global systemic risks – multiple, interconnected, and compounding crises

    - Global governance mechanisms for the management of biological research risk
    - Solar radiation management risks
    - The development of existential risk studies
    - Climate change scenarios
    - Strategic planning for think tanks
    and more

In this short video content examples are drawn from one exercise relating to the management of global systemic risks implemented by ASRA, the Accelerator for Systemic Risk Management Assessment.
The process is described in terms of two phases:
    1. A generative phase, generating a branching structure of narratives describing alternative futures
    2. An evaluative phase, harnessing the use of LLM AI models to describe and analyse what can be large bodies of text generated by this process
