Come join us for an exciting first ever international card game session of our project where we discover future sustainable transition pathways using a novel card game. The event is on 30.09 (Wednesday) in the library at 14.30. See you there!
How can we make sense of alternative futures at a time when sustainability transitions require changes across technologies, institutions and everyday practices? How can scenarios help us understand the dynamics of these changes and consider our capacity to shape them? This interactive workshop invites participants to explore these questions through a facilitated card game focused on the future of mobility systems.
Conducted by Johanna Vallistu, Joanna Raidal and Karmen Kütt-Ehala from Tallinn University of Technology, the workshop brings together two approaches: sustainability transitions thinking and foresight through scenario exploration. We combine them into a novel participatory method that connects alternative future worlds with the processes through which systems change. The card game provides a shared structure for exploring how emerging developments, established arrangements and wider societal pressures interact, and how these interactions can produce different mobility futures.
Mobility offers a concrete setting for this exploration. Moving towards sustainable mobility involves changes in infrastructure, public policy, business models, spatial planning, cultural expectations and everyday routines. Yet – multiple sustainability pathways are ahead of us at the moment. Participants will consider how different answers to these questions shape both transition processes and their possible outcomes.
The session is designed for participants interested in sustainability, mobility, governance, innovation or futures methods, with no prior experience of scenario work required. By the end, participants will have practised interpreting alternative futures, examining the systemic dynamics of transitions and discussing choices under uncertainty. The workshop also creates space to assess how a playful, structured format can support interdisciplinary dialogue and make complex questions about sustainability transitions more tangible, accessible and open to collective inquiry.
